Antique Malayer Runner.
3.44 x 1.05 m.
Antique Malayer rugs, originating from Northwest Persia, are well known for the unique quality of their designs, combining the bold, graphic forms of tribal and village weavings, with the craftsmanship, precision, and delicate drawing one would expect from a fine Persian workshop piece.
This runner, dating to the beginning of the 20th Century, features a rare ivory ground, overlaid with a charming floral motif - inspired by 19th Century European rugs, rather than the traditional geometric patterns most commonly found in Malayer carpets - repeated across the field in tones of dusky pink and sage green, all in gracefully aged vegetable dyes, and surrounded by a wide, decorative five-part border; a bold composition, relative to this piece’s narrow format.
A lovely early piece, in very good condition for everyday use, to add character to a variety of settings.
