A magnificent Silver Water Jug / Ewer made by John Chandler Moore for Allcock & Allen of New York.
The body of the jug is of baluster form with castellated leaf embellished rim, leaf –capped ornate scroll handles with leafy junctions, the body is embossed with panels depicting a castle and a dog running among rushes, all among ornate foliate scrolls around a plain central scrolling cartouche.
The Jug is raised on a leaf embellished circular base and the underside is engraved “Christopher Wolfe, John Wolfe, Christopher Wolfe Jr.,John Wolfe, John Wolfe Jr. The Jug holds approximately 5.5 English pints. John chandler Moore worked exclusively for Tiffany from 1851 onward.The jug was made for the wealthy New York Wolfe family whose house in Newport The Reefs was built in 1853 and the estate was subsequently sold to the Whitney / Vanderbilt family
