An agate and silver gilt model of the crucifixion.

South German, first half of the 17th century.

This small altar cross would have served as an intimate piece of devotional art, used in the confines of a wealthy patrons home for private worship.

The body of the crucified Christ hangs lifelessly from the cross, its base flanked by the figures of the Madonna and Saint John the Evangelist.

Between the mourning Saints lies a skull on crossed bones, it was believed that the bones of Adam were buried on the Golgotha, the same place in which Christ was crucified.

At the base of Golgotha stands Christ with the woman of Samaria at the well.

The group is mounted upon a later black marble base.

Measures 24 x 7.5 x 7.5cm.
