47th Duke of Connaught’s Own Sikhs - Ink Blotter, 1910.
Length: 12cm (4.6in).
Silver and gilt. Desk ink blotter with wood roller backed with Indian silver and applied with an officer’s 1901-02 waist belt clasp for the handle, centred on the regimental number in Roman numerals, 'XLVII', within a quoit bearing the unit title, 'Sikhs', surmounted by an Imperial Crown, within a circlet and wreath.
The 47th (Sikh) Bengal Infantry was raised in 1901 in Sialkot, in the north-east of Punjab, now Pakistan. It was renamed the 47th Sikh Infantry in the same year. During the First World War (1914-1918) the regiment served on the Western Front and in the Middle East, as part of the 8th Indian Infantry Brigade, fighting at the Battle of Megiddo in September 1918. In 1922 the 47th Sikhs became the 5th Battalion, 11th Sikh Regiment. The regiment was allocated top India on independence in 1947.
