19th Century Jamaican metamorphic table / jardiniere, attributed to Ralph Turnbull.

JAMAICA, circa 1830

The moveable top inset with exotic specimen hardwoods in a geometric cube pattern, with turned support on an inlaid platform base with four shaped legs terminating in brass claw feet and castors. The top slides off to reveal a metal liner below, the platform base with raised edge to display the top when the jardiniere section is in use, with corresponding brass retainers above.

Ralph Turnbull (b.1788 – d.1865): Ralph Turnbull was the most recognised of all the Jamaican furniture makers of the nineteenth century. He created a style that utilised indigenous woods of Jamaica with dramatic effect, and he is credited with the development of the genre of furniture that is synonymous with colonial Jamaica.

We are grateful to Dr. John Cross for confirming the attribution to the workshop of Ralph Turnbull.
