19th Century French Pier Mirror.

A very attractive mid 19th century French gilt gesso and painted rectangular pier mirror. Having replacement mirror plate, set within attractive painted border to frame surrounded by elegant carved, gilded decoration. Surmounted by central set tablet with carved overflowing urn.

Dating to the end of the 19th Century this is a relatively common design of French Pier Mirror, however this partiular one is a little nicer than many which can be found for a variety of reasons.

The overall condition is very good, with the gilded decoration being largely intact with very little damage of any consequence to speak of in terms of the frame. Also the carving itself is a little crisper and has more definition to it than often found on French mirrors from this period.

The mirror plate itself has almost certainly been replaced and therefore is in good, functional condition and the painted border surrounding it has also been refreshed a little at some point, then many years later scraped back to reveal what we see today, which is a rather attractive worn look, with the original surface peeking out from below the rubbed paintwork.

This mirror is also a great size, not overpoweringly large, but still large enough to have substance and hold its own in a variety of different spots. We would reccomend it for a halllway, a landing, a bedroom, a living room, a dining room or even potentially a conservatory or orangery type setting. One thing is for sure, wherever it ends up it will add an extra layer of elegance and sophistication to the room.
