18th Century Louis XV French Burr Ash Bressan Buffet of Excellent Colour.

A fine quality provincial French Louis XV burr field ash and fruitwood carved buffet of excellent colour and patination from the Bresse region. French Louis XV circa 1770.

The moulded top above a small scroll-moulded frieze drawer, flanked by pear-drop panels and two further frieze drawers, over a central tendril and flowerhead-carved panel, enclosed by cartouche-panelled doors within a moulded frame.

Having panelled sides with the whole raised on a double-scrolled serpentine apron and cabriole legs. The front and sides of terrific original colour and patination with extremely fine carving. The handles to the drawers are of the same period but not original.

These buffets often had a removable top which sat on the back which would be known as a vaisselier, although this buffet shows no previous signs of having one, the Bresse region, with its reputation for rich traditional cuisine, produced more buffets and vaisseliers than armoires.

The provincial cabinetmakers of Bresse produced characteristic furniture under King Louis XV’s reign, using contrasting woods.
