A RARE EARLY 17TH CENTURY ENGLISH OAK GLASTONBURY CHAIR. CIRCA 1620.

THE SHAPED TOP RAIL WITH A CENTRAL VASE OF FLOWERS, FLANKED EITHER SIDE BY TWO FLOWER HEADS ALL WITH PUNCH DECORATION AROUND AND BEHIND. THE BACK PANEL WITH A CENTRAL CARVED SQUARE WITH REMAINS OF PUNCH DECORATION TO THE BACK, THIS WAS PROBABLY CARVED WITH A DATE OR INITIALS WHICH HAVE BEEN DEFACED AT SOME POINT. THE WIDE DOWN SWEPT ARMS ARE VERY SIMILAR IN SHAPE TO THE CHAIR IN THE BISHOPS PALACE IN WELLS, SOMERSET, KNOWN AS THE GLASTONBURY CHAIR AND IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS GENETIC NAME. TWO OTHER SIMILAR EXAMPLES ARE ILLUSTRATED IN EARLY BRITISH CHAIRS AND SEATS 1500-1700 BY TOBIAS JELLINEK, PG 120 PLATE 130 AND PG 123 PLATE 134, THE LATTER HAVING A SQUARE CENTRAL STRETCHER AS THIS ONE HAS. THE ROUND SECTIONS WHICH FORM THE PIVOTS IN THE MIDDLE AND UPPER ENDS OF THE LEGS ARE PEGGED THROUGH THE ENDS. IT IS WORTH POINTING OUT THAT IT IS A COMMON MISCONCEPTION THAT THESE ARE FOLDING CHAIRS UNLIKE THE X FRAMED STOOLS WITH SOFT TOPS, GLASTONBURY CHAIRS CANNOT BE FOLDED.
