A WONDERFUL AND RARE LATE 15TH CENTURY ENGLISH CARVED LIMESTONE FIGURE OF JOHN THE BAPTIST CARRYING THE LAMB OF GOD. CIRCA 1480.

THIS FINE MEDIEVAL SCULPTURE IS FULL OF EXPRESSION, HIS LONG FLOWING HAIR AND DEEPLY FOLDING ROBES AND OPEN MOUTH GIVES A STRONG FEELING OF MOVEMENT. ALTHOUGH WEATHERED AND LOSSES HAVE OCCURED OVER THE CENTURIES IT STILL HAS A GREAT PRESENCE.

DISCOVERED IN THE WEST COUNTRY, IT MOST PROBABLY CAME FROM AN IMPORTANT MEDIEVAL CHURCH, THERE ARE STRONG SIMILARITIES TO THE LARGE STONE SCULPTURE OF JOHN THE BAPTIST ON THE WEST FRONT OF EXETER CATHEDRAL, WHICH IS ALSO 15TH CENTURY.

NOW SUPPORTED ON A LATER STAND.

50" HIGH.SCULPTURE.
