Bronze Bust Of Ann. Possibly A Unique Cast Signed And Dated 1927.

Depicting the sculptor’s daughter, Ann, as a small child with a pensive look, dark brown with greenish tones, signed to the reverse ’Reid Dick ARA 1927 ANN’.

Height:  10” (25.5 cm).

Provenance:  Sir William Reid Dick R.A. and thence by descent to his daughter, Ann.

Benton and thence to her children.

This bronze is almost certainly the same bust of Ann that was exhibited by the sculptor at the Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts Annual Exhibition, 1927, and at The Exhibition of the Royal Scottish Academy of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, The One-Hundred-and-First, also in 1927.

This sensitive depiction of the sculptor’s own child, with a slightly fearful look in her eye and her mouth open as if to speak, gives the viewer the impression that the bust has captured a moment in time, rather than a generalised portrait of a child. The soft hair is represented with a minimum of detail and a sparsity of line in a much more modern style than the sculptor’s predecessors of the 19th century.
