Inscribed on part of old backing attached: near Penycoryd in the vale that leads from Beddgelert to Capel Curig.

James Thomas Linnell was the son of John Linnell (1792-1882) and studied at the Royal Academy Schools with his brothers John and William. He was the most talented of his siblings and exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1850 and 1888.
