Charles I carved oak lion sejant

For BADA Week 2023, Houlston have chosen to feature this superbly rendered Charles I carved oak lion sejant.

The lion is mounted on a later oak plinth and depicted holding a shield with house/merchant marks.

Circa 1640.

Dimensions:

Overall height 34.3 cm.

Lion only height 17.8 cm.

 

 

16th century Belgian tapestryHoulston will also be featuring this impressive 16th century tapestry, Oudenaarde, circa 1580. Woven in coloured wools with silk highlights, the tapestry is designed with a biblical scene from the story of Samson and the foxes. Samson's first wife is shown kneeling in the foreground.
