John Piper, St Mary in the Marsh

For BADA Week 2023 Freya Mitton have chosen to feature this vibrant watercolour of St Mary in the Marsh, near New Romney, Kent.

The painting is the work of English painter, printmaker and designer John Piper CH (1903-1992) and reflects the artist's love for the British countryside. It is also a classic example of Piper's lifelong passion for painting churches, an interest developed as a youth whilst exploring his native Surrey by bicycle.
