Zacharie Noterman - LouLou, A Papillon, 1866.

Oil on canvas.

15 1/2 x 12 inches canvas size.

Zacharie Noterman was born at Ghent in 1820.

He was the brother and pupil of Emmanuel Noterman a painter of animals and singerie. Zacharie lived with his brother at Antwerp before he decided to settle in Paris.

Noterman enjoyed success with his animal paintings. Not only did he paint animal portraits but he also painted monkeys in the role of humans! This style of painting was very popular in 18th Century Flemish paintings and Noterman brothers continued the tradition.

Zacharie Noterman’s singerie paintings treat every-day subjects with satire but never a heavy hand. His animal portraits are characterful and deft in their execution.
