A beautiful pale Vintage Samarkand carpet finely woven with cotton, using the most muted of dyes, a delicate pale blue background, off stone whites, and faded brown/reds.  With an intricate fine weave and connecting pattern of flowers, pomegranates and elements of ancient garrus design too.  Woven in the late 70's to early 80's this carpet does have some age.  A really exquisite large Samarkand carpet which would suit a bedroom or drawing room for example.

Samarkand was once the gateway to China.  As one of the principal cities of the silk route and the main commercial artery of Asia.  It thus became the Western outlet for woven carpets, known to dealers in the trade as East Turkestan. The main weaving centres were Khotan and Yarkand; their carpets were known simply as Samarkands. There is no obvious connection between Samarkand rugs of Khotan and Yarkand, designs varied with Moon Gul motifs, vases and pomegranates used in the main field of the design.

Please request a home visit to arrange a time for us to show you this beautiful large Samarkand carpet in your own home.

We have travelled all over the UK helping interior designers and private customers since 1990.  Our free, no obligation, professional home visit service allows you to view our carpets in your own home to make the right choice.

Samarkand carpets were woven by women from the Uzbek and Kyrgyz tribes (ethnic groups affiliated with present-day Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan) located in the cities of Khotan and Yarkand. The rugs were most popular from the 1600s and into the 1900's.   Samarkand rugs actually come from present-day Xinjiang, which is located in China.
