A very rare George III Silver Mounted Heraldic Coconut Cup made in London in 1799 by Phipps & Robinson.

This very rare example is of a large size and stands on a circular pedestal foot, made in three sections and decorated with reeding. The coconut has a wide silver mount at the rim, with a protruding horizontal girdle. The baluster shaped coconut is of a large size and is one of the finest we have ever seen, displaying exceptional carving.

The coconut displays beautiful raying flower heads in shields, surrounded by interlocking strap work decorated with linear designs and blue bell garlands. Most unusually, the front is carved with a contemporary Crest for a specific family, which indicates that it was a special commission and therefore unique.

The Crest is surrounded by a raised blue bell drop frame. This is the finest decorated Coconut Cup we have offered over the years and the first time we have ever seen one carved with a contemporary Crest. The Cup is in excellent condition and is fully marked in the foot and with the duty mark, sterling mark and date letter on the rim.

It is our opinion that Phipps & Robinson made some of the finest mounted Coconut Cups during this period.

Height: 7.75 inches, 19.38 cm.
Diameter, at the widest part of the coconut: 4.75 inches, 11.88 cm.
