A very fine pair of George II Half Pint Mugs made in London in 1754 by Thomas Whipham.
The Mugs stand on a cast and applied spreading foot and display a baluster shaped body with slightly flared rim. The scroll handle is decoarted with leaf capping and the front of the main body is engraved with a contemporary Armorial. The Mugs are in excellent condition and are very well marked in the foot. It is most unusual to find pairs of mugs from the George II period. The interiors also display fine hammer marks from when they were made, which is always a desirable original feature to see. The Armorial is that of the Baker family of Shrewsbury. Silver made by Thomas Whipham is usually of very fine quality, as he was apprenticed to the Royal silversmith Thomas Farren. He would eventually take over his workshops, after Farren's death.
