The Sugar Caster stands on a stepped circular cast foot which is decorated with reeding. The vase shaped main body is also decorated with reeding and the front is engraved with an unusual contemporary Crest.
The "pull off" high domed cover terminates in a cast bell finial and the sides are pierced and engraved with alternate panels of decoration. One with plain roundels, engraved with trellis work, and the other with beautiful symmetrical scroll work designs.
The caster is fully marked in the foot and with the sterling mark on the sleeve of the cover. This piece is of the finest quality, colour and weight, as would be expected from the workshops of Samuel Welder, who was a specialist caster maker.
He was apprentice to Robert Keble 1707-1714 and had workshops in Foster Lane, when this caster was made.
