Turkmenistan, mid 19th century. Main carpet with a field design of 4 x 10 generously spaced guls and of unusually small size. Main carpets were only used on special occasions and were of heraldic importance, with the weavers obliged to stay within the confines of the distinctive design of the main guls characteristic of their tribe.
