An unusual and attractively shaped penny-in-the-slot tobacco dispenser, the type known as an Honour or Honesty Box.
Sometimes found engraved with a verse to explain the origin of this title, such as "A Halfpenny Pay Before You fill, or Forfeit Sixpence Which You Will, When You Have Filled Without Delay, Shut Down The Lid Or Sixpence Pay". Further engraving will often identify ownership as being with an Inn or a Tavern.
The patentee for the mechanism was Rich of Bridgwater, Somerset.
