A superbly carved and Gilded Rams Head. Possibly Venetian and a Figurehead. Carved from a solid block of pine the execution is outstanding from the wool to the curled horns and the facial features. The nose possibly once had a ring through it to use for mooring if from an early Gondola type vessel. The gilding is still excellent and has taken on a lovely patina showing a shade or two of the underlying Gesso. There is a metal ‘eye’ in the back for hanging and this fine rare piece displays beautifully. Circa 1830-40.
