Small Tekke Turkoman Rug

Small Tekke Turkoman rug dating to the late 19th century.

With its small, almost square size it is only slightly larger than a so-called wedding rug which was usually woven by the bride herself when she was very young and was brought out during the wedding ceremony for the bride to sit on.

The rug in hand has a field design of three columns of six guls which are connected by a grid of dark blue, almost black lines through their centres. A grid of secondary guls in the spaces between the primary guls completes the patterning of the field. This type of secondary gul can also be found on main carpets (see, for instance, on our website https://www.christopherleggeorientalcarpets.com/products/view/antique-tekke-turkoman-main-carpet/ ). 

The main border is formed by a sequence of octagons which are decorated with a star in the centre. The octagons are separated by simple geometric patterns including a comb design. This main border is flanked by two minor borders with a chain of hooked motifs facing away from the main border. A lattice of tree designs decorates the elems at the top and bottom ends. 

The red, which is derived from the madder root, is in a warm, rather soft hue. 

The rug is worked in wool on a wool foundation and is overall in very good condition.
