Sir Stanley Spencer RA (British, 1891 – 1959)
Studies of Arms, probably for Soldiers at the Sandham Memorial Chapel, Burghclere
Pen and ink on paper
10 x 7.3/4 in. (25.5 x 20 cm.)
Provenance: Daphne Charlton
Spencer is known as one of Englands’ most important artists of the 20th Century. This particular picture is a great insight into how he planned his compositions, working hard to solve problems of overlapping arms and hands.
He has produced a rhythymic composition for a major work. The text, though partially lost, refers to how the arms would have been presented, possibly to show one of his patrons.
