Silver and Horn Verge Pair Case.

Signed: Budgen - Croydon.
Circa: 1790.
Diameter: 54 mm.
Depth: 12.5 mm.

A late 18th Century English verge in silver and underpainted horn pair cases containing three watchpapers from the maker.  Full plate fire gilt fusee movement with round pillars.  Pierced and engraved masked cock, diamond endstone in a blue steel setting. Engraved plate for the silver regulator disc. Plain three arm steel balance, blue steel spiral hairspring.

Flat white enamel dial with Roman numerals, decorative gilt hands. Plain silver pair case, round silver pendant and bow, maker’s mark “T.P” in a rectangle, hallmark date letter not legible.  Outer case covered in underpainted horn secured by silver pique pin, silver bezels.  Three watchpapers in two designs all bearing the name of the original watchmaker.

It is very unusual for a watchpaper from the original maker to remain with the watch.  The inclusion of three indicates it was serviced by them over a number of years.  William Budgen, Croydon and London, 1750 - 1824, Clockmakers Company.  The horn in very good condition, a few of the pins lacking.
