A scarce French plan.

Title Plan de la Ville de Londres et de Westminster avec le Bourg de Soutwark, leurs Faubourgs et leurs Environs.

Author DANET, Guillaume.

Publisher chez Danet sur le Pont Notre Dame a la Sphere Royalle.

Publication place A Paris.

Publication date 1727.

Engraved plan, inset views of Monument and Mary-le-Bow church, tear to old fold in upper margin skilfully repaired.

Notes

Attractive plan of London.

To the left and right of the title is an explanation in French of London and its principal buildings. Below the plan are two views, one of Monument - the great doric column designed by Wren and Hooke to commemorate the Great Fire; and the other, St Mary-le-Bow church; another Wren masterpiece that was completed in 1680 and considered at the time the second most important church in London, after St Paul's. Also below the plan is a list of the most important streets, hospitals, churches, public buildings, and gateways. The plan bears grid lines for easy reference.

Guillaume Danet was the son-in-law of the well-known cartographer Nicholas de Fer. However, Danet was far less prolific a mapmaker, and consequently his maps are rare.

Scale: 5 inches to 1 statute mile.
