An Ancient 'Breccia' Column with a bull-nose moulding to the top and a slightly stepped plinth.

Roman, 1st - 3rd Century AD

Probably 'Pavonazzetto' from the Iscehisar quarries in Turkey - see the Corsi Collection of Decorative Stones at Oxford. Corsi describes the stone as:

"Breccia persichina. Pale purplish ground that verges on peachy colourwith small shiny white markings. There is an urn of this marble under the last altar on the left in the church of S. Antonio de' Portoghesi. Rarissima!"

The column presumably having been outside, has had its surface cleaned in the 20th century
