A fine small 17th century table clock with pull quarter repeat. Circa 1685
Case
Ebonised with ebony mouldings on an oak carcass, the domed top surmounted by an S scroll handle, pierced ebony frets to the top rail of the front door and above the glazed side apertures. Flat to the table base.
Dial
5 3/4 inch square brass dial with silvered chapter ring, matted centre with calendar aperture above XII, winged cherub spandrels and blued steel hands.
Movement
The 8 day movement with five latched double baluster pillars, going train with knife edge verge escapement with brass bob pendulum, the strike train controlled by an engraved outside countwheel striking on a bell. Pull quarter repeating on a separate bell, the backplate engraved with tulips signed Richard Lyons London.
Height 13 inches to top of handle
Richard Lyons was born in circa 1635 and apprenticed to William Almond in November 1649. Freed in December 1656 and made Assistant to the Clockmakers Company in 1674, Warden from 1679 and Master of the Clockmakers Company in 1683. Attended regularly up to 1690.
