With deeply carved shell back, scrolling sides to the uprights and a reeded seat support and reeded sabre legs.
Gillows of Lancaster were one of the finest English furniture manufacturers of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. They made chairs to this design between about 1810 and 1820; in 1811 a set of 'shell back' hall chairs was made for the Revd. Holland Edwards of Pennant, Conway, North Wales. A pair of chairs extremely close to the present example, stamped by Gillows, is in the Abbot Hall Museum and Art Gallery, Kendall. See Susan E.
