A Rare & Highly Decorative Chimney Piece in the Manner of George Brookshaw.

The frame carved part gilded and polychrome decorated, with the inverted breakfront top shelf having a running carved foliate decoration; the frieze having to the centre a rectangular Neo-classical copper panel, painted in the manner of Angelica Kauffman of Apollo and his Muses, and being flanked by further panels of bouquets of ribband tied roses, and, to the extremes, panels of classical females allegories of Comedy and Drama; the vertical uprights painted with panels of climbing flower wreaths.

George Brookshaw (c. 1751-1823)

A London cabinet-maker specialising in painted furniture, mostly in muted pastel colours, with Neo-classical counterpoints; working from his premises at 48 Great Marlborough Street, Regent Street, his trade card describes himself as 'Peintre-Ebeniste par Extraordinaire'. He was employed in the interior decoration of Carlton House by Henry Holland at the behest of the Prince of Wales.  Brookshaw also published drawing manuals on fruit, flowers, and birds.
