A Rare Art Deco Period Box decorated in Lacquer.

The box of oblong shape with curved sides, the Lacquer of cinnabar red ground with shaded pattern reminiscent of watered silk. A diagonal bad of incised decoration,stylised floral and geometric shapes in good leaf.

The box retains an original paper label to the underside showing that it was exhibited at the Exposition Coloniale Internationale, PARIS, 1931.

The label shows the piece was exhibited in the Salon d'Art, it is numbered 326 and the name and address of the exhibtor as Hoang-Kim-Quy (the last section is sadly missing) and the address as 18, Bd Gia-Long, Hanoi.

Hanoi became the capital city of French Indochina from 1902-1945.

Condition report

The lacquer is in overall good condition, there are signs of some cracks to the lacquer surface on the sides over the joints of the wooden box beneath.There are some losses to the original paper descriptive label to the underside.
