Portraits of four horses painted for Walter Waring during his time with the 1st Life Guards, inscribed to the reverse……….

All further inscribed W. (Walter) Waring Esq. and by the artist W. (William) Redworth, artist; Castle Street, Slough. (Niger painted at Bicester April 1901.
Finely framed in plain solid oak with gold slips and engraved name-plates pinned to the lower face.

William Josiah Redworth (1873-1947) was born and lived much of his life in Slough  Buckinghamshire, later moving to Cornwall. He was best known as a painter of landscapes, working in oil, watercolour and pastel. His portraits of horses are all recorded as being painted in oil including a set of six commissioned by the Ashton-Jonson family of Englefield Green and Hyde Park.
Walter Waring was a British soldier and politician, educated at Eton. Commissioned into the 1st Life Guards in 1897, he served in the Boer War, (together with Niger) was awarded the Queen’s South Africa Medal and six clasps. He was mentioned in despatches and promoted to Captain in 1904.
Waring served as Master of the Horse to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, 1906-1907 before serving in the Yeomanry between 1915 and 1917. He was with Naval Intelligence during 1918.
At the end of the war, in 1918, Waring left the army to pursue his political career. He died in 1930.
