Early 20th Century
Constructed of embossed carton-pierre laid onto wood, colours are predominantly red, white, blue and gold on a cream background. This hatchment was almost certainly made to celebrate an important Royal event, possibly a coronation.
Hatchments were commemorative plaques or canvas panels representing the Heraldic Coats of Arms of prominent noble families placed in public buildings and churches of a locality around the 17th century and later. Many are still to be seen particularly in prestigious country houses and churches in England.
