A good 18th century perspective print; Vue De La Place Navone a Rome, the original work by Jean Barbault, engraved by B.F. Leizelt.

Excellent, sharp impression, with original colour, printed on laid paper. Condition very good.

Within a replica 18th century moulding frame. o.s:19 3/8 in x 15 1/4 in

The artist of this scene is Jean Barbault (1718–1762) a French painter, etcher and printmaker. Barbault worked in Rome for most of his life and is noted for paintings of local people wearing traditional costumes and for his work documenting iconic Roman monuments and ancient antiquities. The engraver is Balthasar Friedrich Leizelt (fl. 1760-1799) a German printmaker, active in Augsburg. Produced to be viewed through a zograscope, either within the home, (if one was wealthy enough), or else at country fairs and the like. Such perspective views were superseded by what became known as the Magic Lantern, invented in January 1793 by the German, Paul de Philipsthal, and whom by 1801 had come to London and opened an exhibition at the Lyceum Theatre in the Strand.
