Persian Mehraban runner dating to the first half of the 20th century.
The design is commonly found on Sarab runners, including the beautiful reciprocal border. However, the fact that it is single wefted and on a red ground with a cotton warp points to an origin in Mehraban, which is, perhaps, not surprising since the two areas in the northwest of Iran are adjacent to each other.
All colours are based on natural dye stuffs, with the very rich red derived from the madder root. It has a heavy, chunky weave and a solid handle.
The runner is in excellent condition.
