This room-size southwest Persian Bakhtiari garden carpet was made in the early part of the 20th century. The overall field design of elegantly shaped lozenges is typical of carpets from this area, with the love of flowers and trees a feature running through the lives of people from this arid part of the world. The lozenges on a white ground each contain a cypress tree and flower heads. They are arranged in a diagonal, alternating with lozenges on a dark blue ground and a gul farang motif of red flowers. The lozenges in the opposite diagonal contain a tree, flower heads and a peacock. Unusual in a Bakhtiari carpet is the colour scheme, notably the absence of a strong yellow and an intense red.

This is an elegant room-size carpet in excellent condition.
