Peninsular War Aquatint of a Coldstream Guard.

A fine, period aquatint portrait of Lieutenant Colonel Sir Henry Sullivan of the Coldstream Guards, engraved by W. Bond after the original work by Henry Edridge.

The title band informs that Sir Henry was 'Killed in the Sortie from Bayonne, 14th April 1814, in the 29th Year of his Age'.

Bayonne is a major city in the south-west corner of France lying on the estuary of the River Adour. Throughout the Peninsular War Bayonne was a major obstacle to Wellington’s advance into France and in 1814 was considered a necessary port for the supply of Wellington’s army. The city remained in French hands until the end of the Peninsular War.

This engraving records Sir Henry with what became known as the Wellington Shako. Monochrome, but for his face and un-gloved hand which are printed with colour, it is presented in an ebonized and parcel-gilt, carved wood frame of the period, English circa 1815.
