A pair of fine portraits painted in monochrome and depicting two Knowlys siblings, Thomas John, 17th April 1814 when 11 years of age and Mary, painted in 1805 when 9. The ink inscription to the reverse further states that Mary was 'afterwards the wife of Geoffrey Nightingale'.

Within their original gilt frames, one bearing the trade label of 'D.W Lawrence, Carver and Gilder' etc., etc., 'No. 9 Castle Street, Leicester Fields'.

Thomas John Knowlys was born in Lambeth in 1803 and educated at Trinity College, Oxford. Here he met and became friends with Peter Hesketh and went on to marry his sister, Anna Maria Martha Hesketh.. Thomas and Anna lived at Heysham Hall and had 10 children. He died in 1850 'from the effects of a pistol shot'.

Mary, born in Stockwell, Surrey in 1801, married Geoffrey Nightingale in 1822 and died in Wimbledon in 1873. They had 3 childeren.
