A Pair of Louis XVI Ormolu-Mounted White Locre Porcelain Vases and Covers Resting on later Amethyst Bases. Circa 1775.

Each with foliate finial above a domed cover, the frieze with a ribbed rim above a continuous pierced arch motif with a foliate edge, the ovoid body with female mask handles and a twisting foliate waist on a moulded socle, the base with beaded edge and hung with laurel swags, with a circular laurel moulding on a square plinth, with blue underglaze crossed sword marks.

A related pair of Louis XVI ormolu-mounted white Locre porcelain vases with identical porcelain bodies, related mask handles fixed to the body in the same manner, and a pierced frieze with similar ribbed edge is currently preserved in the Louvre (inv.TH1394) The Locre manufactory (1772 – 1824) is amongst the best known of the Paris factories. J.B. Locre de Roissy established the factory as a manufacture e porcelain allemande on the rue Fontaine-au-Roi, and several months later hired the modeler Laurent Russinger as a Director. In 1777 Locre retired and 1787 Russinger purchased the manufactory. The crossed torch mark seen on this pair of vases was used by the factory from 1773 and is sometimes erroneously confused with the crossed swords of Meissen.
