A fabulous pair of antique Persian Kashan rugs, dating from the early 20th century.  The wonderful vase design begins the ground design, the vases filled with roses and turmeric flowers.  On either side of this floral display use are a pair of Cranes.  Moving upwards,  another two sprays of Tumeric flowers, then three roses either side of a palmette which is mirrored on either side by a pair of blue jays.   Finally at the top of the design, is  another palmette design, but this time a pair of peacocks are depicted either side.  The remainder of the field has been beautifully decorated with Tumeric sprays, the whole rug surrounded by a rose and palmetto border.

Amazing to have a pair of rugs still together, with many generations since the rugs production, it is more often the case that the pair has been split up.  This pair are in very good original condition and we have cleaned the rugs throughly which has enhanced the colours and softened the wool further.  Please do see all the additional images to see further details

Kashan was a center of silk production since Safavid times and some of the best classical Persian silk rugs have been attributed to Kashan. At the end of the nineteenth century the weavers there began to produce high quality wool rugs and carpets as well, which continued the high standards of design and technique established in the classical era. The very best Kashan carpets and rugs are known as Mohtasham.
