The Tureens are of a large size and are cast. Each piece has a baluster oval form and stands on four finely detailed paw feet, attached to the main body with very detailed lion mask mouldings.

The nuturalistic side handles are decorated with foliate motifs and stylised raying shells. The front and reverse display a raised Rococo revival cartouche, engraved with a contemporary Crest, flanked by foliate sprays, scrolls and Rococo shell details.

The stepped, pull-off, covers are decorated with a gadrooned band, interspersed with raying shells. The domed top, terminates in a crossed branch finial, with oval lobed platform below. Both pieces are in exceptional, crisp, condition and are of an outstanding weight. The base and rim of the cover display a crisp set of hallmarks.

Thomas Robins was a quite exceptional maker of Tureens and his mark is to be found mainly on the components of fine silver dinner services.

He had workshops in Stationers' Hall Court, Ludgate Hill, when these Tureens were made. He was apprentice to his cousin, John Robins, a silversmith of fine quality.

The quality of design and production, seen in both tureens, is exceptional. They are, without doubt, the finest of their type which we have offered over all of the years
