This exceptionally fine Salver stands on four unusual feet decorated with palm leaves and flower heads. The raised shaped circular rim is decorated with gadrooning interspersed with anthemion motifs, as well as double Rococo raying shells, flanked by acanthus foliage. This was a known Paul Storr design.

The centre of the Salver is very finely engraved with a contemporary Armorial, with Crest above and motto "Festina Lente - Be Quick without impetuosity" engraved on a banner below. The Armorial is flanked, either side, by falcon supporters. The Salver, and engraving, are in exceptional, crisp, condition and display a fine set of hallmarks on the reverse.

This piece is made of a very good gauge of silver and has a fine patina. Salvers from the workshops of Paul Storr are rare, as he made few during his career.

The Arms, Crest and Motto are those as used by George Onslow, 1st Earl of Onslow (1731-1814) who sat as M.P. for Rye from 1754-1761 and for Surrey from 1761 to 1774. From 1765 to 1777, he was junior Lord of the Treasury.

He then became successively Comptroller of the Household and Treasurer of the Household. A portrait of the 1st Earl is shown, as is their seat Clandon Park, the magnificent Palladian Mansion in West Clandon, County Surrey.
