A charming Old Sheffield Plate butter shell of a type made from around 1770 and into the early 19th century, this example being an early and finely made specimen; the folded edge, necessary at this time to hide from sight the copper sandwiched between the silver, has been worked to virtual invisibility.

Standing on three small shell feet, typical of this design of dish.

6 1/8 in x 5 5/8 in.
