Mary Fedden (British, 1915-2012)

Still Life with Cow Through the Window

Pencil and watercolour on paper

Signed and dated ‘Fedden, 1974’ (lower left), with a further dedication ‘For dear Jo and Michael with inexpressible gratitude and love, Mary / February 26 1974’

29.1/4 x 21.3/8 in. (74.3 x 54.2 cm.)

This is a particularly large example which veers away slightly from her usual style, perhaps because it was specifically for some dear friends of hers. She has spent a lot more time than usual detailing the still life and the shading on the cows as well as the flowers in the meadow.

There are not the usual rather naïve flat blocks of colour, only a suggestion that the fruit and flowers have yellow hues. As a result some may think this is a slightly more interesting composition of Mary Fedden’s.

Dimensions

29.1/4 x 21.3/8 in. (74.3 x 54.2 cm.)

Open by appointment and at fairs
