A very decorative antique Mahal carpet with a lovely open design and woven with an unusual white background, most Mahal or Sultanabad carpets where made using richer deeper blues and reds.  The design has been well executed with good symmetry and interesting floral motifs.  The thing that makes this carpet stand out and a rarer piece is the palette of colours, the ivory background and the delicate soft yellows and pale blues.

These colours and combined with the all over design make it a delight to furnish or design around.  This carpet dates from around 1890-1900 and the condition is extremely good, the wool pile is excellent with a nice pile throughout.  The fringes are original and the carpet has no areas of damage or stains.  We wash all our carpets by hand to replenish their colours and freshen them up.

Mahal carpets were produced in Sultanabad, Persia which is now Arak in the center of Iran. Mahal and Sultanabad rugs were made in the same area as the earliest Fereghans and Sarouks, but they are very different in form and structure. Floral motifs and overall designs of vine scrolls and palmettes remain consistent with the influences of western color palettes and are all characteristics of Ziegler carpets.
