AN EXCEPTIONAL BRASS INLAID MAHOGANY Louis XVI Tric Trac Table.

France circa 1785.

Width 45 ¼” (115cm) depth 23 ¾” (60.5cm) height 28 ¾” (73cm).

Of rectangular form this sensitively brass mounted and inlaid table has a reversible galleried top with tooled leather on one surface and baize on the reverse. The top can be removed to reveal an interior fitted for backgammon with an alternating stained green and plain ivory board.  The frieze on each side contains a single long narrow drawer for counter storage mirrored by a dummy drawer. The four tapering fluted legs are brass inlaid and terminate in elegant brass toupee feet.

This table’s well selected wood and fine brass inlay indicate that it was likely to have  been commissioned from an ebeniste of some standing.

This object incorporates old ivory and has been registered with Defra
