A Louis XVI Ormolu Mounted Tulipwood, Amaranth, and Marquetry Console Table Attributed to Charles Topino. Circa 1775.

With a shaped white marble top above a single drawer, decorated throughout with floral marquetry swags and on tapering legs.

Charles Topino, maître in 1773.

Charles Topino specialised in making small tables, chiffonnieres and bonheur -du-jour although he is also credited for making commodes and secretaires in both the transitional and Louis XVI styles. His pieces were distinguished by their high quality and individual marquetry decoration, for which he gained great acclaim. He often made marquetry with items such as vases, teapots, bottles, and other artefacts such as cards. He also was famous for marquetry with garlands of flowers and bouquets such as this very fine and unusual piece. He worked for several years as an independent craftsman from his workshop in the rue de Faubourg-Saint-Antoine and although he did work directly for some of the French Aristocracy his main customers were the marchand-merciers and marchand-ebenistes notably, Hericourt, Dautriche, Migeon, Delorme, Tuart, Joubert and Boudin. Examples of his work can be seen at Waddesdon Manor, Musees des Arts Decoratifs, Louvre Museum, and the Nissim-de Cammando and Versailles and many others.
