Late 19th-Century Delhi Shawl.

Highly decorative Delhi shawl worked in floss silk on a fine black gauze.

Like on another Delhi shawl on our website (see https://www.christopherleggeorientalcarpets.com/products/view/antique-delhi-shawl/), the ends are richly embroidered with a profusion of flowers. They are contained in a square with three large botehs, each over a small circular motif. Different shades of green, yellow, red and blue create a sense of abundance of both colour and shape.

The black gauze is enclosed by an embroidered border in the same style and colour scheme as the ends. It is embellished with ten rows of small flower heads, mainly in red, white and orange.

Textiles of this type were usually targeted at the European market. The transparency of the gauze still makes this a supremely elegant accessory to a wardrobe.

The textile is in very good condition.
