Karabagh carpet dated 1862.

A very rare dated 1862 antique Karabagh Kelleh with the most outstanding colour and early all over palmette design. The pile on this long corridor carpet is very high, it is in exceptional original condition having been purchased from a private collection it has been looked after extremely well.

The colours are saturated and with the early dyes we can see the aubergine and soft yellows. The vibrant colours would brighten an entrance, it could work in both a traditional and contemporary setting.

There is varied colour but because of its good age, 156 years old to be precise it has muted colour.  So it would not dominate a space, instead adding character and real interest.

These pieces were woven in the south-west of Azerbaijan, an area that produced these unusual long corridor carpets. Carpet weaving grew in the 2nd half of the 19th century as the commercial market demanded exciting, bold flamboyant pieces for the West.

A similar antique Karabagh kelleh sold at Christies in London 2016.
