Japanese tokkuri.
Late Genroku period (1688-1704).
Of slightly tapering square-section form, sloping shoulders and a short upright neck. Each side with an underglaze blue border decorated gilt floral meanders.
Alternatively encompassing a scene of a scholar standing before a waterfall under a pine tree within a fenced garden, and a similar scene with the scholar absent.
The sloping neck in iron-red with cartouches. The neck simply decorated with flower sprays.
Genroku means ‘Original happiness’.
