Japanese polychrome apothecary bottle.
18th century.
In typical gallipot form.
Decorated with birds among branches of fruiting pomegranate and peony. With a band of lappets and scrolling foliage at the shoulder and with four peonies around the neck.
Gallipots were produced in a number of sizes as Japanese export ware, and were probably used as apothecary bottles or to store wine.
The flanges around the neck allowed for a cloth covering to be fastened over the top.
A similarly decorated gallipot is in the Ashmolean Museum Collection, Oxford; Accession no. EA1978.1793
